One is fueled by survival (I won't be defeated), whereas the other is fueled by self-reliance (I will make my own destiny). As to football itself, I must note this:

If Messi would ever tell me that in that moment he thought "four minutes ago my cross was just a couple of yards short, and now given where the defender is I slightly changed my aim" ... THAT would be the greatest play in the history of the game.
